Afterlife Science for the Bereaved and Dying

Dr. Piero Calvi-Parisetti

Italian-born Scottish author and speaker Piero Calvi-Parisetti is a medical doctor originally specialising in Public Health and Disaster Management. At the beginning of his career, employed by the International Red Cross and the United Nations, he worked for a about deacade in the management of large-scale humanitarian aid operations in Africa, Asia and the former Soviet Union. At the end of year 2000 he moved from field operations to the classroom, taking up a late academic career. Until 2015, he has been Professor of Emergencies and Humanitarian Action at the Institute for International Political Studies of Milan University (Italy) and a visiting professor to several other universities. In 2004, a simple anecdote narrated by his wife triggered an intellectual interest, at first, and then a true scholarly passion for psychical research (the scientific investigation of the ways that organisms communicate and interact with each other and with the environment that appear to be inexplicable within current scientific models) and, especially, for the study of empirical and scientific evidence pointing to the survival of human personality of bodily death. After digesting some 30,000 pages of literature, in 2008 Dr Parisetti wrote his first book 21 Days into the Afterlife, hailed by NY Times bestselling author Michael Prescott as “The best introduction I have seen to the survival hypothesis”. The book received very complimentary reviews by specialists and lay public alike, was translated into six languages and went on to become a little Internet publishing success. After 2010, Dr Parisetti’s interests focused on applied psychical research, that is the practical application of the research findings. He formally trained as a cognitive-behaviour psychotherapist and developed an original patient education approach directed to those who suffer because of the loss of a loved one and those who are in fear of impending death (their own or a loved one’s). This approach aims to help the bereaved and the dying developing a rational belief in life after life – a belief based on reason, built upon the critical evaluation of evidence, rather than on faith. A self-help workbook with an accompanying 8-hour video course based on this approach are currently being developed as a collaborative project under the aegis of the Forever Family Foundation. Dr Parisetti is a member of the Society for Psychical Research and of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, two professional scientific research organisations, and serves on the scientific advisory board of the Forever Family Foundation, a nonreligiuos, not for profit organisation strong of over 10,000 members worldwide which is dedicated to furthering the knowledge of afterlife science amongst the bereaved. Dr Parisetti will speak to us about his work in applying his research findings on survival into his work as a psychotherapist.

The Arthur Conan Doyle Experience

Ann Treherne

Following her second year of successful, sell-out shows at The Edinburgh International Festival Fringe, Ann Treherne, Chairman of The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre, joins us to talk about this famous man of literature—and Spiritualism! Ann comes from Edinburgh, the birthplace and hometown of Conan Doyle and her talk takes us on a journey of discovery, of his childhood in Edinburgh, his schooling and university life, before he began to make his way first as a Doctor and then, as a Writer. Famous author of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle eventually became the worlds foremost spokesman on Spiritualism. Throughout her talk Ann explores the early stirrings of his lifelong interest is psychic and spiritual matters and tells us why the building bears his name—and why the SSPR have conducted investigations there!. Ann comes from a corporate background in banking and finance, latterly being CEO of a multi-national, subsidiary company to National Australia Bank—one of the largest companies in the world. Consequently, Ann has a very logical and analytical mind—which has been something of an asset when being asked to conduct psychic investigations, but which she openly admits has been more of a hindrance in her own mediumistic development! Ann is a long-standing member of The Scottish Society for Psychic Research. Come and hear her talk about some fascinating experiences in The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre and a strange chain of synchronicity that has led to this talk!

The Archie Roy Lecture

A Conspiracy History of the World

Andy Thomas

Why is the fascination with global conspiracies now so widespread, and what is the evidence to support the belief that the truth of how things are run is being kept from us? Andy Thomas explores the deeper alternative history of humankind, as seen through the eyes of those who question the establishment version of events, analysing the development of covert agendas from ancient times to today, exploring key moments in conspiracy history, from the Gunpowder Plot and the World Wars, to JFK, Watergate, the Moon landings, Princess Diana, 9/11 and the growth of the 'New World Order' project. Andy reveals why finding the truth behind these and other huge controversies is crucial to moving civilisation forward positively on a new, more enlightened path.
For more than 20 years Andy Thomas has been a leading researcher and speaker on Crop Circles and Earth Mysteries. Andy's also a prolific writer, penning eight books exploring the unexplained, including the highly praised Vital Signs: A Complete Guide to the Crop Circle Mystery, which has been described by many as the definitive guide to the circle controversy and was nominated for Kindred Spirit magazine's 2002 Best Book award. His most recent book was 'The Truth Agenda', which explored the world of parapolitics and conspiracy theories. This was the topic of his most recent visit to the SSPR and we welcome this most engaging speaker back to speak at our prestigious Archie Roy Lecture.

The Science Delusion: Freeing the Spirit of Inquiry

Rupert Sheldrake

The science delusion is the belief that science already understands the nature of reality, in principle. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. The impressive achievements of science seemed to support this confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology. Dr Rupert Sheldrake shows how the sciences are being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. Should science be a belief-system, or a realm of enquiry? In the sceptical spirit of true scientific enquiry, Sheldrake turns the ten fundamental dogmas of science into questions, opening up startling new possibilities. For example, the “laws of nature” may be habits that change and evolve. The Gravitational Constant may not be constant. Minds may extend far beyond brains. The total amount of matter and energy may be increasing. Memories may not be stored as traces in our brains. Sheldrake argues that science would be better off without its dogmas: freer, more interesting and more fun.

Rupert Sheldrake, Ph.D. is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and 10 books, including The Science Delusion. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge University, a Research Fellow of the Royal Society, Principal Plant Physiologist at ICRISAT (the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) in Hyderabad, India, and from 2005-2010 the Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project, funded from Trinity College, Cambridge. Gordon Rutter

Shortly after the invention of photography the first ghost photographs were being produced. Nowadays with the prevalence of cameras more ghost photographs than ever are being produced. Gordon Rutter has had a life long interest in all aspects of the paranormal and coupled with a similar length interest in photography it was natural that his interests would mesh. In 2011 his fifth book - Ghosts Caught on Film 3 was published. A frequent speaker on the paranormal Gordon runs the Edinburgh Fortean Society and regularly contributes to magazines and other media.

The Psychology of the Sceptic

Robert McLuhan

The ‘psychology of the believer’ is a common topic for sceptics, covering such things as unreliable memory, tricks of the mind and wishful thinking. But what about the sceptics themselves? The confusion and hostility often manifest in their responses to psychic claims attest to the presence of unacknowledged psychological pressures. Robert McLuhan will look at the some of the effects of cognitive dissonance on the strongly disbelieving mind, including the need to invent ‘confessions’, deny their own experience and discredit the source of a paranormal claim by any means possible in order to restore sanity.
Robert McLuhan has been a foreign correspondent for the Guardian and a dance record producer, and now works as a freelance journalist. He blogs about paranormal topics at Paranormalia ( and recently published Randi’s Prize: What sceptics say about the paranormal, why they are wrong and why it matters.

The Hole in the Sky

Brian Allan

Brian Allan is a writer, investigator and Editor of 'Paranormal Magazine'. He has written many books on the paranormal and has spoken to the society before on Rosslyn Chapel. This presentation, 'The Hole in the Sky' [also a book by Mr Allan, published by Hidden Mysteries] concerns the possibility that 'gateways' and 'portals' exist between our version of reality and a range of others. Mr Allan speculates that these 'alternate realities' "may be the location of what, for want of a better term, we call the 'spirit world'". The author's opinion is that, "they might even be where ET's originate and I demonstrate that if this is the case, then ET's do not and cannot originate in this universe because the periodic table precludes it".

An Evening of Mediumship

Lecture Theatre 2, Boyd Orr Building, Glasgow Uni,

7.30 pm start

Special Fundraising Event. Tickets ?10

Mediums are: Stephen Burns, Maureen Donnelly & Jacqui McLeish

There has been a strong relationship between psychical research and spiritualist mediums since the origins of both modern movements in the Victorian era. So called 'mental mediumship' [i.e. allegedly receiving information through paranormal means, without going into trance, or producing physical seance type phenomena] is now commonly seen on television, and is either derided as exploitative entertainment, or lauded as providing comfort to the bereaved and proof of an afterlife! So whether your interest is to scrutinise the mediums or hope for a message, the SSPR invites you to support our public demonstration of mediumship. We have three mediums with good reputations, so whether it's your first time, or your hundredth, our evening promises to be a thought provoking event!

The South Shields Poltergeist
Hamilton Lecture

Darren Ritson and Mike Hallowell

Meticulously documented. The South Shields Poltergeist is a truly terrifying account which details the speakers' struggle with an invisible, malicious entity that threatened and intimidated anyone who stood up to it. Their encounter may well go down in the annals of psychical research as one of the most chilling true-life encounters of its kind. A man had his torso slashed severely. Knives, coins and other objects were thrown around, Telephone calls and txt messages were received from numbers that were supposed to be disconnected. Children's toys actually spoke to the investigators. Mike is a paranormal investigator with forty years of research in the field, (commonly called 'The Wizard of the Weird' by his friends). Darren is an author and Civil Servant who lives in North Tyneside. He has had an interest in the paranormal for most of his life due to some strange experiences he had as a child. He founded the North East Ghost Research Team in May 2003 and to date has penned fifteen books - ten of which have now been released - on ghosts and the paranormal. He has been a member of the SPR since May 2007 and hopes to maybe make a small difference in the field of psychical research.

Psychic Detection - Solving Crimes With Psi

Roy Stemman

Roy has a lifetime of experience investigating many aspects of the paranormal. He is the director of Karma Publishing, which among other things hosts the online magazine 'The Paranormal Review.' Law enforcement agencies are understandably wary about making use of psychics or mediums to solve crimes: to do so undermines their own credibility. Yet there are many cases on record in which assistance by individuals with paranormal powers has made a significant contribution to apprehending offenders. Author Roy Stemman, who has been investigating and writing about the paranormal for more than 40 years, discusses the role of psychic detection in crime busting, highlighting some of the successes and failures. In particular, he focuses on the work of American intuitive Sonja Grace whose psychic guidance has led to finding – alive – five youngsters who had gone missing from home, as well as directing searchers to the body of a teenage boy, a month after his disappearance.

The Shaman Within - reviving rites and rituals for the 21st Century and beyond

Barbara Meiklejohn

Recognised as the UK’s hardest working Shamanic Seer and High-Priestess, Barbara has been working with Spirit since the age of 12. Having been brought up in the Celtic, Pagan, Wiccan and Druidic traditions, Barbara combines this work extensively with the Native American traditions as well as that of many other indigenous cultures bringing together ancestral wisdoms which she has coined as ‘Shamanic Seership’. She worked at the Arthur Findlay College for 5 years and at the College of Parapsychology in Edinburgh for 3 years and now at The College of Psychic Studies, South Kensington with others in the offing. Barbara has overcome many challenges in her life, not least of which her dyslexia to put her 40 years of oral learning and experience to paper with her first book The Heart of All Knowing, published in 2007 by O Books. This talk draws on all her 40 years experience, covering such ‘hot topics’ as seership, past lives, original wounding, vision questing, healing rites to name a few, not just to explain what they mean to us as souls in human bodies but why they are so important now and the role that they play in healing our emotional, physical and spiritual selves, bringing about wellbeing at a time of increasing dis-ease and dis-connection among all human beings regardless of their metaphysical persuasions.

FWH Myers in Life & Death

Dr Trevor Hamilton

FWH Myers was one of the founding members of the Society for Psychical Research in London in 1882. A Greek Scholar & Poet, his work with the Society culminated in the classic 'Human Personality and its Survival of Bodily Death' published after his death. In this work he mused on subjects such as automatic writing, sleep, trance states, genius & hypnosis: subjects still crucial to our understanding of personality; and aspects of ourselves that Myers knew raised the most essential & challenging questions of his - and our - time. Trevor Hamilton is a historian with degrees from Oxford, London and Sussex Universities. He retired from his post in higher education at the end of 2006 to write full-time on the history of psychical research. He published in 2009 the first full-length biography of FWH Myers and is now working on a book examining the cross-correspondences, which many researchers have seen as the most convincing evidence of post mortem survival yet produced.

From Orbs to Light Beings From Beyond

John Pickering and Katie Hall

Beyond Photography by Katie Hall & John Pickering was the first book in the world to photographically document one couples personal encounters with orbs and other paranormal light phenomenon. Although neither Katie nor John were aware of it at the time, they had photographed some of the most astounding images ever taken of this phenomenon, many of which they will be sharing with us. John has this to say about their forth-coming presentation: "We had no preconceptions about this phenomenon, but since the publication of our book, a whole new world of "orbology" has mushroomed into being. Orbs have caught the imagination of people all over the world and thousands are now photographing these strange circles of light. Whatever we may think about them, orbs are an undeniable phenomenon! Essentially all experience of Reality is subjectively perceived and interpreted and this is particularly so in the case of paranormal phenomena. But if orbs really are paranormal, how is it possible to photograph them? What is the truth about orbs and other extraordinary light phenomenon now being photographed by all kinds of people with all kinds of cameras? Today there are all sorts of beliefs about orbs and in our presentation we shall be examining key questions concerning orbs, looking deeper into the nature of the phenomenon and giving a personal perspective as to what orbs, as part of an interconnected range of phenomena, mean to us as individuals."

He has been present in Dr. Cardoso's studios both in Vigo and in Lyon when results have been obtained under carefully controlled conditions, and at Dr. Cardoso's invitation he now serves on the Editorial Board of the ITC Journal. He was Dr. Cardoso's co-organiser for the 2004 ITC Conference.
